I have been passionate about learning about fungi since 2004 when I took microscopic photos of mycorrhizal fungi for grad student Wyth Marshall. I wanted to see what the fungi looked like aboveground, so I took Biol 324 ‘Structure and Reproduction of Fungi’ with Dr. Mary Berbee. Mary took us to Capilano Regional Park. We were tasked with identifying one species of fungi by both morphology and genetics. I chose one red, slimy and bitter tasting mushroom which ended up be Cortinarius causticus. I used genetics to estimate how many species are in the province of British Columbia. There are hundreds!!! And many are undescribed species. I spend ten years studying Cortinarius mushrooms. I know them mainly by their DNA sequences and not how they look like. That’s why it’s so much fun to find them in the woods. I want to share my enjoyment of finding and learning about fungi with you.
