SUMMARY:February 10th Meeting: Member’s Night
DESCRIPTION:Hello myco people! \nI’m excited to announce our first Floral Hall meeting of the year\, featuring the return of member’s night\, and to share details about a special mushroom presentation from the folks at Nature Vancouver.  \nMember’s Night: \nAs per tradition\, member’s night is a chance for members of the VMS to put on short presentations on different fungal topics. We have so many amazing experiences and perspectives within the Vancouver fungal community and we love to showcase what people have been up to. Some speakers may choose to talk about academic work\, regional species\, cooking\, or photography to name just a few examples!  \nWe would love to hear from you on what has caught your interest in mycology from the past 2 months.. or 2 years! \nPlease email president@vanmyco.com to sign up or for more information. \nWhile it may not be peak mushroom season\, we’d still love to see any specimens you bring to our monthly mushroom table for identification and admiration. \nLove the talk? Your VMS membership allows you to access an archive of several past talks on our website for your marathoning pleasure. As always\, masks are encouraged in indoor spaces and for all in-person events! \nVMS is still hybrid and we would love to see you virtually if you can’t make it in person! \nTopic: February Meeting \nTime: Feb 10\, 2026 07:30 PM Vancouver \n— \nNature Vancouver will be hosting a special virtual presentation (via Zoom): \nfire-following fungi– MONIKA FISCHER: Thursday\, January 22nd @ 7:30 pm \nMonika Fischer is an Assistant Professor  of fungal biology in UBC Botany department.  Her lab’s research seeks to understand the molecular mechanisms that mediate fungal interactions and drive ecological processes\, especially in the context of fire. Her first passion was food and she was a chef for several years before getting bit by the fungal bug while working at a farm-to-table restaurant in Washington. A strong desire to understand how fungi interact with each other and their environment propelled her through a biology bachelor’s degree at University of Washington in Seattle\, and then a microbiology PhD and postdoc at UC Berkeley in California\, which is where she started studying the genetics and ecology of fire-adapted fungi.  \nPlease see here for more details on how to attend: https://naturevancouver.ca/events/%F0%9F%8C%BFfire-following-fungi_monika-fischer/

SUMMARY:Dec 10th Meeting: Jared “Qwustenuxun” Williams
DESCRIPTION:Hello VMS members\, \nOur next meeting will be held exclusively online\, with no in-person option at VanDusen this time\, and will feature a special talk by Jared “Qwustenuxun” Williams. \nJoin Qwustenuxun\, from the Quw’utsun Nation on southern Vancouver Island\, for an evening of learning about the deep relationships Indigenous peoples have with mushrooms and the cultural protocols that guide how we harvest them. Together we’ll explore how mushrooms have been part of our food\, medicine\, and teachings\, and how these practices remind us to approach the land with respect\, reciprocity\, and care. This talk invites us to reflect on our own foraging\, and how we can walk in better relationship with the fungi and the living world around us. \nJared “Qwustenuxun” Williams is a Hul’q’umi’num language speaker\, Indigenous chef\, Salish culture educator\, and consultant from Quw’utsun. Raised in Salish culture by his father and late grandmother\, he carries forward teachings of traditional harvesting\, Indigenous foods\, and community history. After a decade in western kitchens\, Qwustenuxun returned home to cook for Cowichan Elders and deepen his knowledge of Indigenous foodways. \n\nToday\, he shares those teachings widely from Cooking in Two Worlds with FeedBC to a TEDx talk\, national food sovereignty projects\, and his role as Chair of the Indigenous Advisory Council to BC’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Whether presenting at the UN World Food Forum or paddling the Salish Sea with his sons\, Qwustenuxun’s work is grounded in humility\, self-determination\, and the relationships that keep culture alive. \n\nTopic: December Virtual Meeting\nTime: Dec 10\, 2025 07:30 PM Vancouver\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/85272250725?pwd=sQGpG2jjVsDjf6vaiYpM5ajS9YM11K.1 \nMeeting ID: 852 7225 0725\nPasscode: 364446 \n\nLove the talk? SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Fungal Collections of the UBC Herbarium
DESCRIPTION:Greetings VMS! And a big welcome to our new members from the Spring festival.. \nApologies for the late announcement this month\, I promise this one is worth the wait! \nFungal collections at the UBC Herbarium: Overview and recent developments\nPresentation by Justin Ngo\n7pm Tuesday\, June 10th @ Floral Hall (5251 Oak St.) \nJustin Ngo is one of two Curatorial Assistants under Karen Golinski at the Bryophyte\, Lichens\, and Fungi Collections at the UBC Herbarium\, located in the Beaty Biodiversity Museum. He graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Science studying predominantly plant biology\, though many of the courses he has taken as an undergraduate student have touched upon the immense physiological and molecular complexity of the fungi. Having worked at the UBC Botanical Garden and the Temporal Ecology Lab in Forestry before beginning this position\, he has had experience in handling delicate botanical material and managing large databases. \nThe UBC Herbarium in the Beaty Biodiversity Museum holds more than 91 thousand accessioned dried fungus and lichen specimens\, serving as a key resource for fungal and lichenological research\, university education and public outreach. The two collections\, which emphasize B.C. specimens\, are housed in 90 specially-designed cabinets in a unique\, publicly-accessible space. Specimen cabinets are punctuated by stunning displays\, including shadowboxes illustrating a species of Cortinarius named for Oluna Ceska\, and an artful presentation of the Sherman Brough lichen-dyed wool collection. \nUBC is part of a global effort to increase the visibility and usability of herbarium collections by making data and images available online through publicly-accessible data portals. We deeply appreciate the pioneering efforts of Dr. R.F. Scagel\, who initiated the process of recording UBC specimen metadata in 1981. With the assistance of student and community volunteers\, we have made substantial progress in processing a large backlog of specimens. Soon\, with the help from mycological community members\, we will start uniting specimen records with images from the Mushroom Observer and other sources to further facilitate biodiversity discovery and appreciation. \nDoors at 7\, Talk at 7:30 \nAs always\, we would love to see your specimens at our monthly mushroom table for identification and admiration. Be sure to check out what unique Spring finds are at the May display. \n  \nLove the talk? Your VMS membership allows you to access an archive of several past talks on our website for your marathoning pleasure. As always\, masks are encouraged in indoor spaces and for all in-person events! \n  \nVMS is still hybrid and we would love to see you virtually if you can’t make it in person! Ancient forests\, traditional land based living still exist\, providing a rich culture weaved within nature itself. Connections to fungi are ever present and it’s only gaining more attention. Take a look into the relationships the locals have with certain species of mushrooms\, plants\, & their recipes for use. Olga Tzogas of Smugtown Mushrooms\, based in Rochester\, NY returns to her ancestral home to learn and connect deeper to the mycelial communities\, and the people still practicing traditional ways of life or those creating a new.  Greece is typically pictured by bluebird skies and matching crystalline seascapes\, but Greece is home to lush dense forests of several Oak species\, Chestnut\, Beech\, Fir\, Sycamores and Pine to name a few. The life they harbor is exquisite. See the similarities of fungal life that are shared on both continents. Together we see a visual depiction of the funga\, flora + fauna of this diverse ecological haven of the country of Greece. \n  \nDoors at 7\, Talk at 7:30 \nAs always\, we would love to see your specimens at our monthly mushroom table for identification and admiration. SUMMARY:AGM + Survivor’s Banquet
DESCRIPTION:February 21st: AGM and Survivor’s Banquet \nIf you are receiving this email\, it means that you are a member in good standing and have the opportunity to participate in our AGM from February 21st to February 28th. The AGM will be held virtually\, with some in person delivery for those who wish to participate physically. \nEvery year\, our club holds a general meeting during which club business including the election of next year’s club Officers (President\, Vice President\, Treasurer and Secretary) and Directors (members of the Board of Directors) take place. We must have this meeting to maintain our status with the BC Societies Registries\, the provincial government organization overseeing the operation of organizations such as ours. The covid-19 pandemic has altered the normal schedule of the AGM as well as precluded the usual way of conducting it\, so the current officers\, with the agreement of Directors (consulted by telephone)\, have agreed on an electronic method for transacting the minimum equivalent of an AGM for 2024/5 (instructions below). \nThe two items of business are: (1) Election of the slate of nominees submitted by the Nominating Committee for Officers and Directors and (2) Review and approval of the 2024 financial report. \nAll VMS members in good standing are eligible to vote and the voting is open from 00h00 on February 21st to 23h59 February 28th. This period will commence during our Survivor’s Banquet\, where we will go over the financial report in person and take floor nominations. \nDuring that time\, logged-in members will be able to: \n View a financial report from the club’s treasurer\n Elect the next Board of Directors \nYou can cast your vote only once on each item of business\, and you must complete it for both items at the same time. Votes cannot be changed after they are submitted. Item (1) is carried if the slate receives a simple majority of all votes cast within the allotted time; item (2) requires a 75% majority. “Family” memberships are entitled to one vote per item. \nYou now have 3 weeks to apply to be part of the next board of directors. We highly encourage applications for: President\, Vice President\, Treasurer\, and Secretary. To do so\, please complete this form. Visit https://vanmyco.org/gov/ if you’d like more background. Valid nominees must have been a member of the VMS for more than one year\, be seconded by another member\, and must accept their nomination. \nIn addition to the slate developed by the Nomination Committee\, members are free to be nominated from the floor. Floor nominees must be a) eligible\, b) seconded by another member\, and c) consent to their nomination. To initiate a floor nomination\, please come to our September meeting in person (details to come). \nEligibility for Board Member Position:\n– At least 18 years of age\n– Capable of managing your own affairs\n– Not undergoing bankruptcy\n– Have not been convicted of fraud or corporate offense within the last five years\n– Have been a member in good standing for at least one year \n—- \nSurvivor’s Banquet is a true potluck feast\, “catered” by members\, for members and their guests. See below for more information. (If you are not currently a member or your membership has expired\, memberships can be taken out at the event.) Members are allowed to bring one guest. Entry is by donation\, with a suggested donation of $5 (no one will be turned away for lack of funds). \nMore details: \n Event starts at 5:30 pm at Floral Hall with Happy Hour appetizers\, spreads\, soups\, etc. Dinner starts at 6:30 pm. We may be playing music after dinner if you wish to bring an instrument. We can occupy the space until 10 pm.\n Bring a dish to share with several people\, either an appetizer\, soup\, main or side dish\, salad\, or dessert. Also\, bring a serving utensil or two. (Points for fungi-based dishes\, especially dessert.) Please bring a list of ingredients.\n There is no real kitchen in the hall\, just a small microwave\, so be creative in keeping your dish warm. Tables will be set up to leave your contribution.\n Please bring your own plate\, bowl\, cup utensils\, etc. to use\, as well as any centerpiece or other table decor you’d like to add. Seating is “open” at tables for eight.\n Due to current circumstances\, we highly encourage mask use and social distancing when not seated. \nWe will also be hosting mushroom trivia again this year! Together with the guests at your table\, you’ll be able to flex your mycological knowledge. Prizes will be announced at the ev \nIf you would like to attend\, please register through our Google form by Feb 18th at the latest: \nhttps://forms.gle/njDK87QcK4WDhD1q9 \nSpace is limited\, and you will be notified if you have been waitlisted. SUMMARY:Nov. 12th: Monthly Meeting Fruits of the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Nov. 12th: Monthly Meeting\nTuesday\, November 12th @ Floral Hall\nDaniel Winkler will be making his return to Canada to bring us: \nFungal Fruits of the Forest – Choice Edible Mushrooms of the PNW\nDaniel will present our choice edible mushrooms such as chanterelles\, hedgehogs\, king boletes\, morels\, bear’s head and cauliflower mushroom which are easy to identify\, helping one to overcome mycophobia and truly appreciate wild mushrooms. In this richly illustrated presentation\, Daniel will help you get to know\, identify and find many great edible mushrooms while steering you clear of dangerous look-alikes. By the example of enjoyable edible fungi\, Daniel will open for you the gates to the kingdom of fungi and elucidate their ecological functions and diversity in lifestyles. A key component in finding your mushrooms is getting to know their preferred habitat and their seasonality. Daniel will share lots of new insights from his new book “Fruits of the Forest – Handbook to Edible Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest. In addition\, Daniel is mixing in some fungal fun & facts from his ethno-mycological research and Mushroaming adventure travels. \nAbout Daniel:\nDaniel grew up collecting and eating wild mushrooms in the Alps and is sharing his enthusiasm as a mushroom educator\, photographer and guide. Daniel just published his “Fruits of the Forest – Field Guide to Pacific Northwest Edible Mushrooms” (available at mushroaming.com). The 400 page\, gorgeously illustrated book is the essence of a lifetime of mushroom hunting around the world. This book is focused on the incredible edible mushrooms of the PNW\, where Daniel has been living the last 27 years. Previously\, he published a series of fold-out field guides: Edible Mushrooms of the PNW\, Edibles of California\, Amazon Mushrooms\, and Medicinal Mushrooms of North America\, as well as MycoCards “Boletes of Western North America”. Daniel managed to blend his career as an ecologist and geographer focused on High Asia towards researching Tibet’s enormous fungal economy. His ethno-mycological Cordyceps research has been featured in National Geographic\, New York Times\, NPR\, BBC World Service etc. In the last decade Daniel started exploring neotropical fungi. SUMMARY:March Meeting: Paul Kroeger presents "Darwin's Elves"
DESCRIPTION:Paul Kroeger has studied mushrooms for over thirty-five years and is a founding member of the Vancouver Mycological Society. He has been involved in many projects and studies about diverse aspects of mushrooms\, gaining knowledge about fungal ecology\, biochemistry of toxic\, hallucinogenic\, medicinal\, and edible mushrooms. Years of experience have created unique insights and understanding of fungal life-ways and interactions in temperate ecosystems. \nKroeger has many times served as President of the VMS and co-authored ‘The Outer Spores: Mushrooms of Haida Gwaii’ in 2012. He has worked at the University of British Columbia researching the biochemistry of medicinal mushrooms and is a major contributor to the mycological herbarium collections in UBC’s Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Paul is an entertaining\, knowledgeable speaker who gives illustrated talks throughout the Pacific Northwest on subjects such as general mycology\, fungal biology\, poisonous mushrooms\, magic mushrooms\, biology\, and the mycology of hot springs. \n“Darwin’s Elves”: Poisonous mushrooms and mushroom poisonings \nAn introduction to poisonous mushrooms and their effects is important for all those who are interested in mushrooms as a hobby. Major toxin types and their effects are described\, and a few case studies show how suspect fungi are identified. This presentation presents practical general guidelines for safely handling and preparing edible fungi\, and avoiding becoming another poisoning victim. Some surprising common causes of ‘mushroom poisoning’ are also discussed. \nDoors at 7\, Talk at 7:30\nAs always\, we would love to see your specimens at our monthly mushroom table for identification and admiration. Be sure to check out what fungal finds are at the March display.

DESCRIPTION:VMS member Michael J. Hathaway draws from his recently published book What a Mushroom Lives For\, the second book in an academic trilogy that began with Anna L. Tsing’s The Mushroom at the End of the World. \nMoving from fungi as an enigmatic kingdom that transformed the ancient Earth to the realm of the fascinating matsutake mushroom on the Tibetan Plateau\, Hathaway reveals the ways these mushrooms are creating their own multispecies encounters\, with and without humans. This book challenges a legacy of human exceptionalism and human supremacy that is dominant in Western thinking and offers ways to notice the creative liveliness of all organisms\, from mammals to mushrooms. \nMembers: Log-in to attend online via Zoom\, or join us in person at VanDusen Floral Hall\nTuesday May 10 @ 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:Christin Swearingen: Mushrooms of Alaska and the West Coast Rare 10
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker\, Christin Swearingen\, is a mycologist volunteering for the Fungal Diversity Survey. She has degrees from Oberlin College (B.A.) and the University of Alaska Fairbanks (M.S.)\, and mentorship from Dr. Gary Laursen (author of Alaska’s Mushrooms). She is currently living in Fairbanks\, working for the Interior Alaska Land Trust to protect natural habitat for all wildlife\, including mushrooms.\n\nThe West Coast Rare 10 Fungi project was launched in fall 2020 to find and document ten species of rare\, threatened\, or declining fungi. Scientists and conservationists need more data on these fungi in order to better understand and protect them and their habitats.
