SUMMARY:AGM + Survivor’s Banquet
DESCRIPTION:February 21st: AGM and Survivor’s Banquet \nIf you are receiving this email\, it means that you are a member in good standing and have the opportunity to participate in our AGM from February 21st to February 28th. The AGM will be held virtually\, with some in person delivery for those who wish to participate physically. \nEvery year\, our club holds a general meeting during which club business including the election of next year’s club Officers (President\, Vice President\, Treasurer and Secretary) and Directors (members of the Board of Directors) take place. We must have this meeting to maintain our status with the BC Societies Registries\, the provincial government organization overseeing the operation of organizations such as ours. The covid-19 pandemic has altered the normal schedule of the AGM as well as precluded the usual way of conducting it\, so the current officers\, with the agreement of Directors (consulted by telephone)\, have agreed on an electronic method for transacting the minimum equivalent of an AGM for 2024/5 (instructions below). \nThe two items of business are: (1) Election of the slate of nominees submitted by the Nominating Committee for Officers and Directors and (2) Review and approval of the 2024 financial report. \nAll VMS members in good standing are eligible to vote and the voting is open from 00h00 on February 21st to 23h59 February 28th. This period will commence during our Survivor’s Banquet\, where we will go over the financial report in person and take floor nominations. \nDuring that time\, logged-in members will be able to: \n View a financial report from the club’s treasurer\n Elect the next Board of Directors \nYou can cast your vote only once on each item of business\, and you must complete it for both items at the same time. Votes cannot be changed after they are submitted. Item (1) is carried if the slate receives a simple majority of all votes cast within the allotted time; item (2) requires a 75% majority. “Family” memberships are entitled to one vote per item. \nYou now have 3 weeks to apply to be part of the next board of directors. We highly encourage applications for: President\, Vice President\, Treasurer\, and Secretary. To do so\, please complete this form. Visit https://vanmyco.org/gov/ if you’d like more background. Valid nominees must have been a member of the VMS for more than one year\, be seconded by another member\, and must accept their nomination. \nIn addition to the slate developed by the Nomination Committee\, members are free to be nominated from the floor. Floor nominees must be a) eligible\, b) seconded by another member\, and c) consent to their nomination. To initiate a floor nomination\, please come to our September meeting in person (details to come). \nEligibility for Board Member Position:\n– At least 18 years of age\n– Capable of managing your own affairs\n– Not undergoing bankruptcy\n– Have not been convicted of fraud or corporate offense within the last five years\n– Have been a member in good standing for at least one year \n—- \nSurvivor’s Banquet is a true potluck feast\, “catered” by members\, for members and their guests. See below for more information. (If you are not currently a member or your membership has expired\, memberships can be taken out at the event.) Members are allowed to bring one guest. Entry is by donation\, with a suggested donation of $5 (no one will be turned away for lack of funds). \nMore details: \n Event starts at 5:30 pm at Floral Hall with Happy Hour appetizers\, spreads\, soups\, etc. Dinner starts at 6:30 pm. We may be playing music after dinner if you wish to bring an instrument. We can occupy the space until 10 pm.\n Bring a dish to share with several people\, either an appetizer\, soup\, main or side dish\, salad\, or dessert. Also\, bring a serving utensil or two. (Points for fungi-based dishes\, especially dessert.) Please bring a list of ingredients.\n There is no real kitchen in the hall\, just a small microwave\, so be creative in keeping your dish warm. Tables will be set up to leave your contribution.\n Please bring your own plate\, bowl\, cup utensils\, etc. to use\, as well as any centerpiece or other table decor you’d like to add. Seating is “open” at tables for eight.\n Due to current circumstances\, we highly encourage mask use and social distancing when not seated. \nWe will also be hosting mushroom trivia again this year! Together with the guests at your table\, you’ll be able to flex your mycological knowledge. Prizes will be announced at the ev \nIf you would like to attend\, please register through our Google form by Feb 18th at the latest: \nhttps://forms.gle/njDK87QcK4WDhD1q9 \nSpace is limited\, and you will be notified if you have been waitlisted. Please let me know ASAP if you are no longer able to attend. \nIf you have any questions or difficulty accessing the form\, please email me at president@vanmyco.com

SUMMARY:Entomopathogenic Fungi of Eastern North America (ON ZOOM)
DESCRIPTION:About Rowan Nygard:\nRowan Nygard grew up exploring the creeks and forests around the Eno River in Durham\, North Carolina. There he found a deep appreciation of nature and a desire to know more about the natural world around him. As a photographer and community scientist\, he has immersed himself in the study of ecology\, with a focus on mycology and the ways that plants\, animals\, and fungi interact. Rowan is a passionate educator and hopes to demystify the minutiae so that everyone can better witness the magic of ecology. \nEntomopathogenic Fungi of Eastern North America\nTuesday\, December 10th online via Zoom @ 7pm PST\nThis lecture is based on a niche evolutionary group of fungi that infect and kill insects\, resulting in incredible ecological interactions and beautiful\, sculptural fruiting bodies. Over the last three years Rowan has found 20 undescribed species of Entomopathogenic fungi in Southeastern Pennsylvania and further south in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia\, North Carolina\, and South Carolina. Gain the tools necessary to make informed and appreciative scientific observations of your own! \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/j/82330792028?pwd=r9Pc4f6C1d4yhBDBCPq8EgxfravWPZ.1 \nMeeting ID: 823 3079 2028\nPasscode: 987996

SUMMARY:Nov. 12th: Monthly Meeting Fruits of the Forest
DESCRIPTION:Nov. 12th: Monthly Meeting\nTuesday\, November 12th @ Floral Hall\nDaniel Winkler will be making his return to Canada to bring us: \nFungal Fruits of the Forest – Choice Edible Mushrooms of the PNW\nDaniel will present our choice edible mushrooms such as chanterelles\, hedgehogs\, king boletes\, morels\, bear’s head and cauliflower mushroom which are easy to identify\, helping one to overcome mycophobia and truly appreciate wild mushrooms. In this richly illustrated presentation\, Daniel will help you get to know\, identify and find many great edible mushrooms while steering you clear of dangerous look-alikes. By the example of enjoyable edible fungi\, Daniel will open for you the gates to the kingdom of fungi and elucidate their ecological functions and diversity in lifestyles. A key component in finding your mushrooms is getting to know their preferred habitat and their seasonality. Daniel will share lots of new insights from his new book “Fruits of the Forest – Handbook to Edible Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest. In addition\, Daniel is mixing in some fungal fun & facts from his ethno-mycological research and Mushroaming adventure travels. \nAbout Daniel:\nDaniel grew up collecting and eating wild mushrooms in the Alps and is sharing his enthusiasm as a mushroom educator\, photographer and guide. Daniel just published his “Fruits of the Forest – Field Guide to Pacific Northwest Edible Mushrooms” (available at mushroaming.com). The 400 page\, gorgeously illustrated book is the essence of a lifetime of mushroom hunting around the world. This book is focused on the incredible edible mushrooms of the PNW\, where Daniel has been living the last 27 years. Previously\, he published a series of fold-out field guides: Edible Mushrooms of the PNW\, Edibles of California\, Amazon Mushrooms\, and Medicinal Mushrooms of North America\, as well as MycoCards “Boletes of Western North America”. Daniel managed to blend his career as an ecologist and geographer focused on High Asia towards researching Tibet’s enormous fungal economy. His ethno-mycological Cordyceps research has been featured in National Geographic\, New York Times\, NPR\, BBC World Service etc. In the last decade Daniel started exploring neotropical fungi. SUMMARY:March Meeting: Paul Kroeger presents "Darwin's Elves"
DESCRIPTION:Paul Kroeger has studied mushrooms for over thirty-five years and is a founding member of the Vancouver Mycological Society. He has been involved in many projects and studies about diverse aspects of mushrooms\, gaining knowledge about fungal ecology\, biochemistry of toxic\, hallucinogenic\, medicinal\, and edible mushrooms. Years of experience have created unique insights and understanding of fungal life-ways and interactions in temperate ecosystems. \nKroeger has many times served as President of the VMS and co-authored ‘The Outer Spores: Mushrooms of Haida Gwaii’ in 2012. He has worked at the University of British Columbia researching the biochemistry of medicinal mushrooms and is a major contributor to the mycological herbarium collections in UBC’s Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Paul is an entertaining\, knowledgeable speaker who gives illustrated talks throughout the Pacific Northwest on subjects such as general mycology\, fungal biology\, poisonous mushrooms\, magic mushrooms\, biology\, and the mycology of hot springs. \n“Darwin’s Elves”: Poisonous mushrooms and mushroom poisonings \nAn introduction to poisonous mushrooms and their effects is important for all those who are interested in mushrooms as a hobby. Major toxin types and their effects are described\, and a few case studies show how suspect fungi are identified. This presentation presents practical general guidelines for safely handling and preparing edible fungi\, and avoiding becoming another poisoning victim. Some surprising common causes of ‘mushroom poisoning’ are also discussed. \nDoors at 7\, Talk at 7:30\nAs always\, we would love to see your specimens at our monthly mushroom table for identification and admiration. Be sure to check out what fungal finds are at the March display.

SUMMARY:Michael Hathaway presents: What a Mushroom Lives For
DESCRIPTION:VMS member Michael J. Hathaway draws from his recently published book What a Mushroom Lives For\, the second book in an academic trilogy that began with Anna L. Tsing’s The Mushroom at the End of the World. \nMoving from fungi as an enigmatic kingdom that transformed the ancient Earth to the realm of the fascinating matsutake mushroom on the Tibetan Plateau\, Hathaway reveals the ways these mushrooms are creating their own multispecies encounters\, with and without humans. This book challenges a legacy of human exceptionalism and human supremacy that is dominant in Western thinking and offers ways to notice the creative liveliness of all organisms\, from mammals to mushrooms. \nMembers: Log-in to attend online via Zoom\, or join us in person at VanDusen Floral Hall\nTuesday May 10 @ 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:VMS Meeting: Britt Bunyard
DESCRIPTION:Britt Bunyard will present “From Lowly Saprobe to Mycorrhizal Masters: Amanitas (A Tale Told in the DNA)” \n\nAn overview of all aspects (biology\, taxonomy\, chemistry\, physiology) of the beautiful Amanita mushrooms of North America. Everyone is familiar with the mushrooms but how much do we really know about what they are doing in the forest? How much do we know about their history and evolution? It turns out that a recent discovery–using modern molecular biology–led to an amazing discovery about their evolutionary past. Amanitas are mycorrhizal symbionts with forest trees but come from saprobic ancestors. The story is told in their DNA. Newbies and non mycologists will not be overwhelmed; advanced mycologists will not be bored\, this discussion is for everyone with lots of beautiful images. \n  \nBritt Bunyard\, PhD\, is the founder\, Publisher\, and Editor-in-Chief of the mycology journal Fungi. Britt has worked academically (and played very amateurishly) as a mycologist his entire career\, writing scientifically for many research journals and popular science magazines. He has served as an editor for mycological and entomological research journals\, and mushroom guide books. A popular evangelizer on all things fungal\, Britt has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered\, PBS’s NOVA and Wisconsin Foodie television programs\, and in The Atlantic\, Vogue\, Forbes\, Saveur\, Women’s World\, and others. He serves as Executive Director of the Telluride Mushroom Festival. He co-authored Mushrooms and Macrofungi of Ohio and Midwestern States (The Ohio State University Press) and is the co-author of the forthcoming Amanitas of North America and The Beginner’s Guide to Mushrooms (Quarry Books)\, both scheduled for publication in 2020.

SUMMARY:VMS Meeting: Sharmin Gamiet
DESCRIPTION:Our presenter is our very own Sharmin Gamiet\, with the topic “Towards Understanding Macrofungi of the Northwest Territories”. \nAfter completing a project for Environment Canada on “General Status of the Species – Macrofungi\,” it became clear that there were significant knowledge gaps on the status of the macrofungi in the Northern areas of Canada. Dr. Suzanne Carriere from the Wildlife Branch of the Government of the Northwest Territories set out to rectify this situation. For the past 4 years\, Sharmin and others have been visiting forest sites\, mostly around the Yellowknife area but from other areas as well\, to collect\, photograph\, document and voucher macrofungi\, with the goal of creating a database of macrofungi for the Northwest Territories. This talk\, an update on the project\, will discuss the challenges faced in identifying forest macrofungi north of the sixtieth parallel. \nSharmin Gamiet has been working with fungi for over 30 years\, focusing on mushrooms and their relatives found in the Pacific Northwest (BC\, Washington and Oregon). She has trained at UBC and the University of Washington using the Friesien species concepts (macro and micro morphological\, rather than genetic traits\, are used to group fungi). Sharmin has led mushroom forays throughout BC for many years and enjoys sharing and discussing mushrooms in their habitats.

SUMMARY:VMS Meeting: Michael Hathaway
DESCRIPTION:Pine Mushrooms as World-Makers (re-scheduled from cancelled February meeting) \nFrom Michael:  \n“This talk will give a brief introduction to a long-term collaborative research project that follows the harvest and trade in the pine mushroom (matsutake) from several countries around the world to its destination in Japan. I will focus on how this valuable trade is shaping the lives of several indigenous groups in Southwest China\, on the eastern edge of the Himalayas\, such as ethnic Tibetans and Yi. I suggest that the trade itself (as well as larger political events) are influencing the livelihoods of these people\, such as how they farm and raise yak and goats\, but also creating less expected changes such as fostering a kind of ethnic resurgence.”\n  \nMichael Hathaway is an associate professor of cultural anthropology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver\, British Columbia. He studies the intersection of indigenous politics and environmentalism in China\, and more recently\, has been exploring how indigeneity has emerged in the Asia-Pacific region through transnational encounters. His first book\, Environmental Winds: Making the Global in Southwest China (University of California Press\, 2013) explores how environmentalism was refashioned in China\, not only by conservationists\, but also by rural villagers and even animals themselves. His second major project examines the global commodity chain of the matsutake\, one of the world’s most expensive mushrooms\, following it from the highlands of the Tibetan Plateau to the markets of urban Japan. He works with other members of the Matsutake Worlds Research Group\, looking at the social worlds this mushroom engenders in Canada\, the United States\, China\, and Japan.

SUMMARY:VMS Meeting: Spencer Stuart
DESCRIPTION:LECTURE DESCRIPTION \nBeatrix Potter was a woman of many interests and ambitions\, however we often come to know only one\, her children’s books. Renowned for her fabulous Peter Rabbit storybook illustrations at the turn of the Century\, Potter during this period was also involved in mycology and\, later in life\, land conservancy efforts in Britain. \n Join lecturer Spencer W. Stuart as he explores three facets of Potter’s life. Beginning with her extraordinarily successful children’s tales\, of which she published twenty-three\, he will delve into Potter’s lesser-known involvement with the study of fungi through scientific illustration as well as writing. Now housed in the Armitt Museum in England and Perth Museum in Scotland\, these beautifully executed and famously accurate watercolours continue to serve as reference to both amateur and expert mycologists alike. Finally\, he will discuss her enduring legacy to the conservation of the historic Lake District of North West England\, revealing not only the familiar figure we have all come to know of imagination and fairy tale but also an enthusiastic\, down-to-earth Naturalist caught up in the debates of the day. \nBIO \nSpencer Stuart holds a master’s degree in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute in London\, England (recipient of the Director’s Award). Upon graduation he took a position with Bonhams Auctioneers where he worked closely with the North American Rare Books and Manuscripts department in Toronto and New York. \nSpencer is now a collections advisor for middle to mature stage collectors of rare books\, manuscripts\, photographs\, and prints. In concert with his advising\, he is an active writer and lecturer on histories of the printed word for a variety of international publications including The Book Collector and Amphora as well as having a monthly segment with Sheryl McKay on CBC Radio’s North by Northwest as a Book Historian. \nSpencer is an alumnus of both the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminars (’18) and the Rare Book School (University of Virginia).
