SUMMARY:March Meeting: Paul Kroeger presents "Darwin's Elves"
DESCRIPTION:Paul Kroeger has studied mushrooms for over thirty-five years and is a founding member of the Vancouver Mycological Society. He has been involved in many projects and studies about diverse aspects of mushrooms\, gaining knowledge about fungal ecology\, biochemistry of toxic\, hallucinogenic\, medicinal\, and edible mushrooms. Years of experience have created unique insights and understanding of fungal life-ways and interactions in temperate ecosystems. \nKroeger has many times served as President of the VMS and co-authored ‘The Outer Spores: Mushrooms of Haida Gwaii’ in 2012. He has worked at the University of British Columbia researching the biochemistry of medicinal mushrooms and is a major contributor to the mycological herbarium collections in UBC’s Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Paul is an entertaining\, knowledgeable speaker who gives illustrated talks throughout the Pacific Northwest on subjects such as general mycology\, fungal biology\, poisonous mushrooms\, magic mushrooms\, biology\, and the mycology of hot springs. \n“Darwin’s Elves”: Poisonous mushrooms and mushroom poisonings \nAn introduction to poisonous mushrooms and their effects is important for all those who are interested in mushrooms as a hobby. Major toxin types and their effects are described\, and a few case studies show how suspect fungi are identified. This presentation presents practical general guidelines for safely handling and preparing edible fungi\, and avoiding becoming another poisoning victim. Some surprising common causes of ‘mushroom poisoning’ are also discussed. \nDoors at 7\, Talk at 7:30\nAs always\, we would love to see your specimens at our monthly mushroom table for identification and admiration. Be sure to check out what fungal finds are at the March display.

DESCRIPTION:Of Maize and Men: How do fungal pathogens such as Ustilago maydis and Cryptococcus neoformans cause disease?\nKabir Bhalla (he/him) is a graduate student in the Kronstad Lab at UBC. He is particularly interested in polyphosphate\, a phosphorus biopolymer\, and how it contributes to disease in the pathogenic basidiomycete yeast\, Cryptococcus neoformans. \n7 pm: Doors and Mushroom Mingling\nCome at 7 pm to secure a good seat and chat about mushrooms with our experts who will identify specimens. Be sure to check out what fungal finds are on the table (and bring your own!) \n7:30 – 9:30: Guest Talk\nBhalla will be presenting a broad overview of C. neoformans and U. maydis\, their disease mechanisms\, and some recent work from the Kronstad Lab at the University of British Columbia. \nJoin us in person at VanDusen Gardens (Floral Hall). SUMMARY:Michael Hathaway presents: What a Mushroom Lives For
DESCRIPTION:VMS member Michael J. Hathaway draws from his recently published book What a Mushroom Lives For\, the second book in an academic trilogy that began with Anna L. Tsing’s The Mushroom at the End of the World. \nMoving from fungi as an enigmatic kingdom that transformed the ancient Earth to the realm of the fascinating matsutake mushroom on the Tibetan Plateau\, Hathaway reveals the ways these mushrooms are creating their own multispecies encounters\, with and without humans. This book challenges a legacy of human exceptionalism and human supremacy that is dominant in Western thinking and offers ways to notice the creative liveliness of all organisms\, from mammals to mushrooms. \nMembers: Log-in to attend online via Zoom\, or join us in person at VanDusen Floral Hall\nTuesday May 10 @ 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:Christin Swearingen: Mushrooms of Alaska and the West Coast Rare 10
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker\, Christin Swearingen\, is a mycologist volunteering for the Fungal Diversity Survey. She has degrees from Oberlin College (B.A.) and the University of Alaska Fairbanks (M.S.)\, and mentorship from Dr. Gary Laursen (author of Alaska’s Mushrooms). She is currently living in Fairbanks\, working for the Interior Alaska Land Trust to protect natural habitat for all wildlife\, including mushrooms.\n\nThe West Coast Rare 10 Fungi project was launched in fall 2020 to find and document ten species of rare\, threatened\, or declining fungi. Scientists and conservationists need more data on these fungi in order to better understand and protect them and their habitats.

SUMMARY:Leah Bendlin: Common Fall Mushrooms of the PNW (and their lookalikes)
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, we will learn some of the most common and memorable mushrooms found in fall in the Pacific Northwest. We will focus especially on common edibles and how to tell them apart from poisonous or just otherwise tricky potential lookalikes\, noting particular physical features and habitats that will help you to identify them on your own. \nPre-registration is required for this webinar. Sign up at https://vanmyco.org/zoom-webinar-access/ \n \nLeah Bendlin is a Portland\, Oregon based mushroom and community science enthusiast. She has been studying mushrooms with a passion for 9 years\, and has special interests in taxonomy\, uncommonly known edibles\, mycoheterotrophic plants\, slime molds\, ascomycetes and social justice. Leah regularly leads mushroom ID classes and walks through various Pacific Northwest organizations and currently serves on the board of the Oregon Mycological Society. SUMMARY:VMS Meeting: Britt Bunyard
DESCRIPTION:Britt Bunyard will present “From Lowly Saprobe to Mycorrhizal Masters: Amanitas (A Tale Told in the DNA)” \n\nAn overview of all aspects (biology\, taxonomy\, chemistry\, physiology) of the beautiful Amanita mushrooms of North America. Everyone is familiar with the mushrooms but how much do we really know about what they are doing in the forest? How much do we know about their history and evolution? It turns out that a recent discovery–using modern molecular biology–led to an amazing discovery about their evolutionary past. Amanitas are mycorrhizal symbionts with forest trees but come from saprobic ancestors. The story is told in their DNA. Newbies and non mycologists will not be overwhelmed; advanced mycologists will not be bored\, this discussion is for everyone with lots of beautiful images. \n  \nBritt Bunyard\, PhD\, is the founder\, Publisher\, and Editor-in-Chief of the mycology journal Fungi. Britt has worked academically (and played very amateurishly) as a mycologist his entire career\, writing scientifically for many research journals and popular science magazines. He has served as an editor for mycological and entomological research journals\, and mushroom guide books. A popular evangelizer on all things fungal\, Britt has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered\, PBS’s NOVA and Wisconsin Foodie television programs\, and in The Atlantic\, Vogue\, Forbes\, Saveur\, Women’s World\, and others. He serves as Executive Director of the Telluride Mushroom Festival. He co-authored Mushrooms and Macrofungi of Ohio and Midwestern States (The Ohio State University Press) and is the co-author of the forthcoming Amanitas of North America and The Beginner’s Guide to Mushrooms (Quarry Books)\, both scheduled for publication in 2020.
